Our story

Aquellos Ojitos Verdes…

You’ve inspired me to follow my dreams.

Maria Del Socorro Serna—my beloved grandmother and godmother—was born on June 12, 1952. Known to all as Coco, she loved unconditionally, and every meal she prepared was infused with thought, intention, and love. It’s in her honor that Abuelita Coco’s was born on June 12, 2023.

Oak Lawn holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I grew up, where I’ve grown, and where I continue to expand. That’s why I chose to open the first vegan café in Oak Lawn—because it’s home. ♥️

Our Mission — The Story of Abuelita Coco’s

I always dreamed of opening a restaurant, but something was missing—until I felt the spark from Abuelita Coco.

She was gentle, wise, and full of love. She could turn a few simple ingredients into magic, always cooking with care and intention.

I became vegan in 2017. When I told my mom, Sandra, something beautiful happened—we began cooking vegan food together. It was incredible. I told her, “You’re going to be the chef of my restaurant one day, using the same recipes Abuelita Coco taught you.”

Abuelita Coco’s is more than a café. It’s a living tribute to Maria Del Socorro Serna, born June 12, 1952, whom we lovingly call Coco. Though she’s no longer here physically, her warmth fills every corner of this space.

As the first vegan café in Oak Lawn, our mission is to create a community rooted in love, empowerment, and kindness. Every dish is made with pure, high-quality ingredients and served with the same care only a grandmother can give.

At Abuelita Coco’s, everyone is family.
